Scooter Rental in Playa del Carmen: FAQ

Scooters are perfect for travelers with a driver’s license who want a fast, fun, and flexible way to move around town. They’re ideal for cruising between beaches, restaurants, or cenotes without relying on taxis. Great for solo riders or couples looking for convenience and freedom.

🪖 Helmet Is a Must. For your safety, everyone riding — whether driver or passenger — must wear a helmet at all times. No exceptions. Remember that you get it free of charge, so please use it.

🚫 Ride Sober. Riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs isn’t just illegal, it’s extremely dangerous. Stay safe and sober on the road.

🪪 Ride With Documents. Make sure you’ve got your original driver’s license on you every time you ride. The same goes for the vehicle documentation that will be given to your during the scooter delivery. Both are required in case of a road stop.

🛣️ Follow Road Safety Rules. Don't exceed the road limitations inside and outside of Playa del Carmen (especially if you're new to riding a scooter). Any fines collected along the way will be paid by you.

⚠️ Report Issues Immediately. If something feels weird or stops working — brakes, lights, anything — let us know right away so we can fix it fast and keep you safe on the road.

Return With Fuel. You’ll get your scooter with a full tank, and we ask you to return it the same way. Fair and simple.

🔄 Same Condition Policy. Please bring the scooter and gear back in the same condition they were in at pick-up. Respect goes both ways.

🔞 What is the minimum age to rent a moped? You need to be at least 18 years old to rent and ride any of our scooters and mopeds. No exceptions.

📄 Required Documents. The only document we require is a valid driver's license from your home country. A photo/scan of the license sent to our Whatsapp or email address will be enough; we don't need the original.

We accept a variety of payment methods. You can pay with:

  • cash in Mexican pesos
  • MXN wire transfer (commission-free if you have a MXN bank account)
  • debit/credit card (+5% processing fee)
  • Paypal (+8% processing fee)
  • MXN wire transfer (commission-free if you have a MXN bank account)
  • Revolut app (commission-free)

When it comes to security deposits, we highly recommend paying in cash to have it back immediately and avoid any delays in refunds handled by our payment processor Mercado Pago.

🛡️ Is Any Insurance Included? Yes — every rental comes with basic insurance already included in the price. If you’d like extra protection, we offer upgrades for a small additional fee.

📋 What Does the Coverage Actually Include? That depends on the plan you choose. Basic insurance that's included with all rentals free of charge offers limited protection (damage caused to other vehicles), while upgraded plans may include theft or damage coverage.

💬 Can I Add Insurance Later? Yes, but only before your rental starts. Once the scooter is in your hands, insurance upgrades can no longer be added.

📱 Do I Get an Insurance Policy Document? We keep things simple: your selected coverage will be confirmed via WhatsApp or email.

📊 How Much Is the Deposit? It depends on the scooter model you choose. The current brackets are 4000-6000MXN.

🔐 Why Do You Take a Deposit? The deposit acts as a safety net for PlayaWheels. It covers unexpected issues like rule violations, late returns, or extending your rental without notice. It’s also our guarantee that the scooter will come back in the same condition you received it.

⚠️ In What Cases Can You Keep the Deposit? Part or all of your deposit may be kept if the scooter is returned damaged or is stolen and not covered by your insurance. It can also be partially withheld for things like late returns, lost equipment or not returning it with a full tank.

📝 Will I Know If My Deposit Is Withheld and Why? Yes — we’ll always explain what happened and break down any deductions. We aim to be fair, transparent, and upfront.

🚿 Will the scooter be delivered fresh and clean? Yes, all our rentals include a pre-rental and post-rental wash - free of charge.

⛽ Will the scooter be delivered with a full tank? Yes, we're always tanking the mopeds to the full right before arriving at your place. However, the tank also needs to be full when you hand it over after your rental ends.

🚚 Do you charge extra for delivery and pick-up? No - delivery and pick-up are 100% free within Playa del Carmen. No hidden fees, no surprises.

📦 How does the delivery and pick-up work exactly? Once your rental is confirmed, just send us your location pin on WhatsApp. We’ll deliver the scooter right to your door — hotel, Airbnb, café, wherever. When your rental ends, we’ll come back to pick it up from the same spot (unless arranged otherwise).

🤔 Why is it free? Because it should be! We’re a local business, and we want your rental experience to be smooth and stress-free from start to finish. No need to visit an office or stand in line.

📍Can the return be at a different location? Yes — as long as it’s still within Playa del Carmen. Just let us know in advance so we can coordinate the pickup properly. We’re flexible, but we do need a heads-up.

⏳ Can I extend my scooter rental? Absolutely — as long as the scooter isn’t already reserved for the next dates. We'd greatly appreciate if you could let us know 12 hours before your rental ends (during business hours: 8AM–8PM), and we’ll do our best to make it happen. In case the scooter you currently use has been rented, we can offer you a similar model!

💸 Can I return the scooter early and get a refund? Yes, we refund unused days — but please give us at least 72 hours’ notice. That way we can make the scooter available to others.

Can I cancel my booking? Yes, canceling is totally free — just let us know as soon as your plans change. We need to know at least 3 hours before the scheduled scooter delivery to avoid loss of time and fuel.

🦺 Is riding a scooter safe? Yes — as long as you follow local traffic rules, wear your helmet, and ride responsibly. Playa del Carmen is scooter-friendly, and thousands ride every day without issue. The number of scooter-related accidents within the town is extremely low, so try not to stress too much about it and just enjoy the ride.

🧑‍🏫 Can I ride the moped if I don’t have much experience? If you’re new to riding, take it slow and avoid busy roads at first. Find a quiet area to practice until you feel confident. And no worries — our team can give you a quick lesson when you pick up the scooter if you’d like.

🪖 Do I have to wear a helmet while riding? Yes — both you and your passenger must wear a helmet. It’s required by law in Mexico, and more importantly, it protects you in case of an accident. Helmets are always included free of charge with every rental.

💥 What if I get a flat tire? Riding the scooter with a flat tire is dangerous for both you and the vehicle. Once you noticed the flat tire, please contact us right away and do not drive any further. Otherwise the damage done to the scooter because of riding with a flat tire will be covered by your security deposit.

👮 What should I do if I’m stopped by the police while riding? It's a rarity but when it happens - stay calm, be respectful, and show your documents — including your driver’s license — and mention that you’re riding a rented scooter. If you’ve broken a rule, you may be asked to pay a fine on the spot.

🛣️ Can I ride the scooter on the highway connecting Playa, Tulum, and Cancún? Yes, but be cautious. Scooters are slower than cars (especially if you rent one with a weaker engine), so stick to the far-right lane and avoid unnecessary overtaking. Highways aren’t built for mopeds — and riding at night is especially risky due to low visibility. If you go, keep your lights on, stay alert, and ride defensively

📍How far can I travel on a scooter? You’re free to travel as far as you’d like, but keep in mind scooters are best for city and coastal trips — not long-distance highway runs.

🚫 Are there places I should avoid riding? We recommend avoiding unlit areas, quiet local neighborhoods far away from the center, and non-tourist zones at night. Stick to main streets and popular spots — they’re safer and better lit.

🌙 Is it safe to ride at night? We don’t recommend it. Headlights on scooters are weak, visibility is low, and you’re harder for cars to see. Nighttime also comes with a higher risk of theft or sketchy encounters — especially outside tourist zones.

🌧️ Can I ride in the rain? If it’s a light shower, yes — but slow down and be extra careful. Wet roads get slippery fast, and braking too hard can lead to falls. If it’s pouring, best to pull over and wait it out somewhere dry.

🏖️ What are the best places to visit by scooter around Playa del Carmen? Scooters are ideal for exploring beach clubs, cenotes, and hidden local spots. Popular nearby stops include Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-Ha, Cenote Azul, and the beaches just south of town. All are easy to reach without needing to ride on the main highway.

🕒 When’s the best time to go sightseeing by scooter? Early mornings and late afternoons are perfect — roads are calmer, temperatures are cooler, and you’ll catch great lighting for photos. Midday heat can be intense, and we don’t recommend riding after dark.

🛵 Can I stop often while exploring? Yes — scooters are super convenient for hopping on and off. You can easily park near cafés, beaches, or cenotes. Just use your lock and take your helmet with you when leaving the scooter.

⛽ How far can I go on a full tank? Most scooters can go around 60–70 km on a full tank, which is enough to visit nearby towns like Tulum or Puerto Morelos. Just make sure to keep an eye on the fuel gauge.

🛵 What if the scooter breaks down while I’m riding? If something stops working or feels off, contact us right away. We’ll either guide you through a quick fix, send a mechanic, or swap the scooter if needed. You won’t be left stranded.

🔑 What happens if I lose the keys or helmet? If you lose any equipment provided with your rental — like keys, helmets, or locks — we’ll deduct the replacement cost from your deposit. Please treat all gear with care and always double-check before leaving a location.

🛠️ What if the scooter gets damaged or stolen? Basic insurance included in the rental price doesn't cover damage caused to the scooter by your own negligence and neither does it cover theft. If you expand the insurance to cover such instance, you won't be charged with any additional costs. If you stick with the basic insurance and damage the scooter or it gets stolen during your rental, you'll be responsible for any additional costs associated with repair or theft. Costs will naturally vary depending on the moped model.

🚨 What if I don’t return the scooter? Your personal information will be shared with local authorities and the case will be reported as theft to the police and insurance provider, along with your ID.

📸 How do you know if the damage happened during my rental? Before each rental, we take detailed photos and videos of the scooter. You’re encouraged to do the same. Any new damage found upon return that wasn’t visible in those images will be considered your responsibility.

📍 How and where can I park the scooter? Scooter parking is usually easy. You can leave it at your hotel, near other parked mopeds, or in public scooter zones marked in blue.

⚙️ How do I start and operate the scooter? If you're new to scooters, we'll give you a basic instruction during the delivery. Scooters are beginner-friendly, but it’s good to know the basics. After longer stops, let the engine run for a couple of minutes before riding — this helps circulate oil and makes your ride smoother and safer.

⛽ What fuel should I use? We recommend filling up with Premium gasoline for best performance on the road. The price difference between Premium and other types isn't really that big to devoid yourself of the best possible riding comfort.

📷 Can I leave the scooter unattended while sightseeing? Yes, but only for short to medium stops. For longer visits (like beach days or cenotes), we recommend parking in paid or supervised lots and keeping it in view when possible.
